Background

GIT 314 Project to create a motion graphic advertisement. Chose Hades 3. Animated official Hades artwork, utilized Adobe stock videos, to create a vibrant motion graphic that connects with audiences.

Objective

Create a non-verbal narrative film using lighting, music, and camera shots to connect with audiences emotionally.

Synopsis

Inspiration comes from Pixar shorts and non-verbal comics/films.

Process

Developed several concepts with outlines. The aim of this concept was to connect with the audience by presenting a narrative about the daily struggle with mundane tasks that come with chronic pain. Ending with a positive, affirming message.

This was accomplished through the personified object “Mr Watson”, pacing, and lighting. The drafted concept blocked out the scenes based on rooms and their functions. Used various shot types to set scenes, emotions, and maintain interest.

Used diffuse lighting to cast a more depressive atmosphere and additional lighting to make sure the character was well-lit. Shot core scenes with plentiful B footage. Used a DSLR camera and Adobe Premiere. Used music that expressed a “dragging” to accomplish simple tasks.

Broke down the important messages in the creative brief and laid them out in the storyboard.

Started off with introducing the studio, then piquing interest with the popular character Thanos, then inviting the audience to speculate by adding character Chaos and the release date. All these elements needed to be on brand, evoke interest with mystery and spectacle, and hype current fans.

Used Photoshop to edit static official art and stock images. Assets were imported into After Effects to create animations and add special effects.

Results

The short film powerfully used lighting, music, pacing, and thoughtful shot selection to convey a quiet narrative about struggling with chronic pain.

Soft, diffuse lighting and restrained color created a subdued atmosphere, while subtle musical cues mirrored the pacing of the protagonist’s daily challenges.

Careful composition and editing placed viewers in the shoes of someone facing persistent discomfort, helping convey struggles non-verbally and connecting deeply with the audience’s empathy.

The film’s restrained visual language and careful tempo encouraged audiences to reflect on the experience, evoking a strong sense of understanding and connection.
